Nestled in the Eagle River Valley, at the base of Beaver Creek Ski Resort and nine miles west of Vail, Avon Colorado sprang up in the midst of the ski area's development. Although this town numbered less than 1,500 people only 20 years ago, today Avon boasts over 6,000 full-time residents, and that number nearly doubles during peak tourist season.
Avon is often referred to as the commercial core of the Eagle River Valley. Named for the Avon River Valley in England, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, this town is home to Vail and Beaver Creek ski area employees and other residents who enjoy the breathtaking scenery and ample outdoor recreation in and around the two ski areas.
In town, Gore Creek provides opportunities for fishing, kayaking and rafting, and the Vail/Beaver Creek Activities Desk has an extensive list of recreational offerings. (See the Beaver Creek section for more resort information).
The May Gallery at Avon's Vilar Center for the Arts hosts top exhibits every year, featuring everything from Native American art to glass works. |
